POLITICS AND THE GOSPEL

As a Church, from time to time, we want to speak into our cultural moment with helpful guides to help you navigate our lives through the Gospel in a meaningful and impactful way here on earth. We want to live and love in such a way that brings Glory to God, joy to God’s people, and a light to God’s world.

The following is taken from "The King of Kings Commitment" by Jim Mullins, pastor of Redemption in Tempe, AZ, and adapted for Center City Church.

This is our desired posture as pastors of Center City Church and pleas for our family of God.
1. We commit our allegiance to King Jesus above all idols and ideologies.
2. We commit to participating in civic life as a way of serving my neighbor rather than just serving our own interests.
3. We commit to honoring the image of God in all people by treating them with respect and abstaining from dehumanizing caricatures.
4. We commit to having our personal views challenged by the biblical story rather than using the Bible to proof-text predetermined positions.
5. We commit to engaging in political discourse with speech that is marked by the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5).

6. We commit to be slow to speak and quick to listen and slow to anger as we seek to learn from the various perspectives within the body of Christ.

7. We commit to giving more attention to critiquing the potential flaws in our own political leanings, conduct and sin than we will give to scrutinizing others.

8. We commit to face to face conflict resolutions rather than arguments on social media.

9. We commit to loving and praying for our so-called political enemies, especially those we have the hardest time loving and praying for.

10. We commit to repenting and returning to our King of Kings and Lord of Lords when we fail to live up to these commitments. We commit to seeking reconciliation to any / all we might hurt in this process.
